On behalf of Warrington Borough Council, I would like to introduce you to our first Community Municipal Investment, which offers businesses and residents the opportunity to invest directly in the Council to help fund green energy capital projects.

We are seeking to raise up to £1 million to help fund the development of a new solar farm in Cirencester. The project will support our Climate Emergency declaration that pledges to make Warrington a net zero carbon area by 2030, 20 years ahead of the Government’s target. It will also support the ambitions of Cheshire & Warrington Local Enterprise Partnership (EP) to be carbon neutral by 2040.

We are proud to have been proactive in pursuing a number of initiatives in the energy sector over the past few years. Successful council projects include the installation of solar photovoltaic (PV) on 3,000 Golden Gates properties, delivering large scale solar roof schemes on the OMEGA development site, developing investments in solar bonds that other councils have invested in, and acquiring solar farms in York and Hull.

We now want to accelerate this momentum and deliver on our Green Energy Strategy, which pledges to:

  • Reduce fuel poverty in Warrington
  • Reduce greenhouse gas emissions in our borough
  • Promote economic regeneration, including creating jobs and growth
  • Make Warrington a centre of excellence in the green agenda
  • Deliver a more sustainable Warrington

We have launched this Community Municipal Investment by way of an issue of bonds offered directly to the public via the ethical investment platform, Abundance, which is FCA-regulated. It is a unique way to invest in Warrington and support your community. It provides the opportunity for your money to be put directly to work where it will make a positive contribution toward our carbon neutral target while providing you with a financial return and deeper engagement with our environmental objectives.

We have recently seen much emphasis being put on the need for climate-friendly stimulus policies to reboot economies in the wake of COVID-19. We believe that Community Municipal Investments can really supercharge the local green economy, to build resilient, sustainable communities for the future.

The investment closes on Sunday 15 November 2020. If you are interested in making a sound, social investment, while playing your part in protecting vital services and helping create a cleaner, greener future for Warrington, you can find out more about investing with us at abundanceinvestment.com/warrington

We’re really excited about this initiative and want it to be a success, so please share it widely among your networks.

Cllr Russ Bowden

Leader, Warrington Borough Council
