One of my favourite destinations in the world is Lapland, I have been fortunate to visit many times and have taken my son to visit Father Christmas twice which created memories that we as a family will never forget.

Lapland is where winter dreams come true. With snow-draped forests, magical Santa experiences, and an abundance of activities, it’s the ultimate destination for families, couples, and those seeking to embrace Arctic charm beyond Christmas time.

For Families: A Magical Christmas Adventure

Lapland is synonymous with festive joy, offering the most authentic Father Christmas experiences imaginable. For something truly special, skip the busy tourist hubs and choose Santa encounters set in secluded woodland locations. Imagine following lantern-lit trails through snowy forests to a cozy cabin where Santa and his elves await, creating magical memories for the whole family.

The resorts of Ylläs, Saariselkä, and Enontekiö offer these authentic, intimate Santa experiences alongside activities like:

  • Reindeer sleigh rides through serene landscapes.
  • Husky sledding adventures for thrill-seekers of all ages.
  • Snow play and tobogganing in safe, family-friendly areas.

These resorts focus on a quieter, more personal Christmas experience, full of charm and natural wonder, and the warm berry juice is just divine!

For Couples: Romance in the Arctic Wilderness

Lapland isn’t just for families though —it’s also a paradise for couples. Its serene beauty provides the perfect backdrop for a romantic escape, with activities and accommodations designed for intimacy and connection.

  • Ylläs: Known for its stunning views and cross-country ski trails, Ylläs offers romantic glass igloos and cozy log cabins for an unforgettable stay.
  • Saariselkä: Home to the renowned Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort, you can sleep under the stars and Northern Lights in luxury glass igloos.
  • Enontekiö: This hidden gem is perfect for those seeking privacy and authenticity, with opportunities to explore Sámi culture or take a private snowmobile safari.
  • Levi: Due to its remote location and dark skies, it makes it one of the best places to witness the Northern Lights, plus it is host to 43 ski slopes (beginners-advanced), winter ski trails and lots of Après Ski activities with its variety of bars and restaurants to relax and unwind after a thrilling day of winter sports.
  • Rovaniemi: Rovaniemi offers a unique combination of festive charm, Arctic adventure, and cultural discovery. Whether you're meeting Santa, chasing the Northern Lights, or immersing yourself in local traditions, it’s a destination with something for everyone.

Why Visit After Christmas?

Lapland’s magic doesn’t end with the festive season. Visiting from January to March offers:

  • Northern Lights viewing: Crisp, clear nights create ideal conditions for spotting the aurora.
  • Winter activities: Snowshoeing, snowmobiling, and cross-country skiing are at their peak.
  • Cultural experiences: Immerse yourself in Sámi traditions with reindeer herding, local cuisine, and storytelling.
  • Peace and tranquillity: After the Christmas rush, enjoy a more serene atmosphere.
