Nestled on the northwest coast of Crete, Chania is a gem that shines with a rich history, stunning landscapes, and vibrant culture. This enchanting region of Greece effortlessly blends the old with the new, offering visitors an unforgettable experience. Here’s why Chania is our destination of the month and a must-visit for any traveller.

Things to See and Do

1. Venetian Harbor: The heart of Chania is its picturesque Venetian Harbor, a bustling hub with a unique charm. Stroll along the waterfront, admire the colourful buildings, and visit the iconic lighthouse that dates back to the 16th century. The harbour is perfect for a leisurely walk, offering stunning views and plenty of spots for a refreshing drink or meal.

2. Old Town: Lose yourself in the narrow, winding streets of Chania's Old Town. The blend of Venetian, Turkish, and Greek architecture creates a unique atmosphere, with quaint shops, cozy cafes, and historical sites at every turn. Highlights include the Archaeological Museum of Chania and the beautiful Chania Cathedral.

3. Samaria Gorge: For nature lovers and adventure seekers, the Samaria Gorge is a must-visit. This 16-kilometer hike through one of Europe’s longest gorges takes you through breathtaking landscapes, with towering cliffs and lush greenery. The trail ends at the village of Agia Roumeli, where you can cool off with a swim in the Libyan Sea.

4. Balos Lagoon: A day trip to Balos Lagoon is an absolute highlight. Accessible by boat or a hike, this stunning lagoon is renowned for its turquoise waters, white sand, and incredible scenery. It’s a perfect spot for swimming, sunbathing, and photography.

5. Falassarna Beach: Falassarna Beach is another jewel in Chania's crown, offering golden sands and clear, azure waters. It’s ideal for sunbathing, swimming, and water sports. The beach also provides spectacular sunsets, making it a perfect spot to end your day. We spent 2 days on this beautiful beach and loved our time there. The water was divine, especially as it was 34 degrees when we visited.

Places to Visit

1. Botanical Park and Gardens of Crete: Located a short drive from Chania, this park is a haven of natural beauty. Wander through the diverse gardens, showcasing the flora of Crete and other Mediterranean regions. The park also has a lovely restaurant where you can enjoy a meal made from fresh, local ingredients.

2. Elafonissi Beach: Famous for its pink sand and crystal-clear waters, Elafonissi Beach is a paradise for beachgoers. The shallow waters make it ideal for families, and the surrounding nature reserve offers a peaceful escape from the crowds. The impressive pink colour of the sand in Elafonisi originates from the so-called Foraminifera shellfishes, which, when they complete their life cycle, leave behind their reddish shells which are crushed in the white sand and mix with it to produce this unique pink colour.

3. Ancient Aptera: Step back in time at the ancient city of Aptera, located about 13 kilometres east of Chania. This archaeological site features impressive ruins from various periods, including a Roman cistern, a theatre, and ancient fortifications. The views over Souda Bay are breathtaking.

Food to Enjoy

Chania is a culinary delight, with a rich tradition of Cretan cuisine that emphasizes fresh, local ingredients. Here are some must-try dishes:

1. Dakos: A traditional Cretan meze, dakos is made with barley rusk, topped with ripe tomatoes, feta or mizithra cheese, olives, and oregano. It's a simple yet flavourful dish that encapsulates the essence of Cretan flavours.

2. Kalitsounia: These small, savoury pastries are filled with a variety of ingredients, including cheese, herbs, and greens. They are a delicious snack or appetizer, perfect with a glass of local wine.

3. Sfakianes Pites: Originating from the region of Sfakia, these thin, cheese-filled pies are usually drizzled with honey. The combination of salty cheese and sweet honey creates a delightful contrast.

4. Bougatsa: For dessert, try bougatsa – a pastry filled with creamy custard, often dusted with powdered sugar and cinnamon. It’s a sweet way to end your culinary journey through Chania.

Getting to Crete from the UK

Traveling to Crete from the UK is relatively straightforward. Here are the primary options:

By Air: The most convenient way to get to Crete is by flying. Direct flights from various UK airports, such as London Gatwick, Manchester, and Birmingham, are available to both Chania International Airport (CHQ) and Heraklion International Airport (HER). The flight duration is approximately 4 hours. Major airlines, including British Airways, easyJet, and Ryanair, operate regular flights, especially during the peak tourist season.

By Sea: If you prefer a more scenic route, you can travel by sea. This involves taking a flight to Athens and then a ferry from the port of Piraeus to Chania's port of Souda. The ferry journey takes around 6-9 hours, with both daytime and overnight options available. The ferries are comfortable and provide a unique way to experience the Mediterranean.

Chania, with its blend of historical charm, natural beauty, and delicious cuisine, truly has something for everyone. Whether you’re a history buff, an outdoor enthusiast, or a foodie, Chania offers a unique and enriching experience that makes it an exceptional destination to visit.
